Local artist & retired high school art teacher Michael Lynne is generously donating his services to proctor Open Art Studio sessions at the AAO on Thursday mornings from 9:30-12:30 in the main classroom.  This is a time for people who would like to work on individual or collaborative art projects in a group setting to come together and work in a fun, supportive environment.  Mr. Lynne will be working on his own projects during this time, but he is also available for guidance with your drawing or painting projects if you would like.  The fee is $5/hour per participant, and the money goes entirely to the AAO to defray heating costs.

Please contact Michael Lynne at ust131@aol.com or 342-4086 if you are interested in participating.  This is not a formal class, nor is there any time commitment – you can come for 1 session or several, for anywhere from 1 to 3 hours per session.  We will start by offering these sessions for the month of November.  If there is enough interest, we can carry them forward as long as the building remains safely accessible (ice buildup on the sidewalks & steps becomes a problem in winter).

Please be prepared to pay at each session via cash or check made out to “AAO” or “Art Association of Oswego”.

Works by Bill DeForest and Ed Eisner

The Art Association of Oswego announces the opening of two new exhibitions this Saturday, October 22.
One exhibition will be held at the Oswego Civic Arts Center, while a second offsite exhibition will be held at a private art studio in Scriba.
A reception for photographer Ed Elsner’s new exhibit will be held in the Arts Center’s Jo Hyse Gallery from 7-9 pm. This exhibit,
entitled Otherworldly includes exotic landscapes and unusual geography culled from the artist’s travels.
The second event, beginning at 8pm, is a studio exhibition of work-in-progress by fine artist and graphic designer Bill DeForest,
entitled Probable & Productive Language. This show offers a glimpse at the artist’s process. It is an investigation of figurative paintings
at a crucial point in their development. The exhibition will be held at the artist’s studio at the intersection of County Route 1 and Route 29 in Scriba.
A bonfire and music are planned in conjunction with this event.
Both events are free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. Ed Elsner’s exhibition will continue until Sunday, November 20.
The Arts Center is located at the northernmost end of East 4th Street in Oswego. Regular gallery hours are from 2-5 pm on weekends or by
appointment.  For more information, call 343-5675 or visit the AAO website at www.oswegoarts.org.

Previous Exhibit  June 11th through July 3rd, 2011:   THOMAS SEAWELL: THE LAST TWENTY YEARS.

Print detail by Thomas Seawell entitled  Arthur Dove’s Studio

Mr. Seawell is a prolific artist who is nationally known for his prints and drawings, but he has also turned to ceramics in recent years.  His exhibition will represent artwork done since his retirement from the Art Department at SUNY Oswego in 1991, where he had taught printmaking and drawing for almost 30 years.  Tom Seawell currently lives in Texas with his wife Barbara Frey-Seawell, a nationally acclaimed ceramist and professor at Texas A & M Commerce.  The two annually travel north to spend summers in their home/studio in Sterling, NY.  Mr. Seawell also travels frequently to photograph doors of famous artists, musicians and writers.  These images often find their way into his prints and drawings.  Seawell’s reputation as an artist is remarkable.  His works have been included in numerous books on printmaking and ceramics.  He has works in collections all over the world, including The Rochester Memorial Art Gallery, The Brooklyn Museum, The Library of Congress, and the Pushkin Museum in Russia.  He has participated in hundreds of solo and group exhibitions.  Always technically innovative, Seawell was instrumental in the development of the collagraph.  His rich multi-layer serigraphs continue to turn the screenprinting world on its ear.  He now brings the same complexity and color sense to his 3-dimensional ceramic sculptures.

The Lakeside Statewide Juried Art Exhibition opened with an artists’ reception on Saturday night, March 12th,  from 7 – 9pm at the Art Association of Oswego, NY. According to AAO Exhibition Coordinator Bill DeMott, “The Lakeside Show”, sponsored by Constellation Energy, is always the highlight of our exhibition season. Artists from across New York State are invited to submit artwork, which is painstakingly sorted out by a selected juror. Only the best pieces make it into the show. This year’s juror was Susan Blumendale, artist and design instructor from the Rochester Institute of Technology. She worked very hard; “there were a lot of great submissions.”

The 2011 Lakeside show, a particularly successful one, opened to a packed house. Almost two hundred people filled the Civic Art Center’s two galleries to look at the art, enjoy gourmet creations by caterer Kim Reynolds and music by guitarist Loren Barrigar. Here are the awards:

Honorable Mention $75,  Carrie Gregg, Auburn, NY,  ceramic vessel, Whisker Cup

In her juror’s statement, Susan Blumendale concluded:

“One of the pleasures of being an artist and art professor is that once in a while you are asked to jury a show that delights you and immerses you into a totally visually engaging experience. This was the case in jurying the Lakeside Statewide Juried Exhibition in Oswego, NY. From ingeniously rendered graphite drawings of female nudes, transparent watercolor patterns on an avian theme, complex digital illustrations, photographs, mixed media, oil and cardboard, handmade books, a wine bar installation, charcoal and graphite portraits, oil paintings and ceramic sculptures, the show exemplified diversity and pure visual delight.”
